OLIV.A.E. – Innovative Olive Growing for a Sustainability-Focused Supply Chain in Emilia-Romagna

[Project duration: June 1, 2025 to November 30, 2026]

OLIV.A.E. is an innovation support project submitted by the OLIV.A.E. Innovation Hub and funded under the CoPSR 2023-2027 (Intervention type SRG09) of the Emilia-Romagna Region through the EAFRD fund. The project aims to define strategies and guidelines to enhance the competitiveness, traceability, and sustainability of the regional olive-growing sector through the adoption of good agricultural practices and innovative technologies.

In a context of growing attention to environmental and socio-economic aspects, the project aims to foster the transition of the olive sector toward more resilient, transparent, and market-oriented production models.

Objectives

OLIV.A.E. aims to combine environmental sustainability and economic competitiveness for the olive sector in Emilia-Romagna through:

  • Identifying and thoroughly analyzing the critical issues of the regional olive sector to define concrete improvement strategies.
  • Establishing an active network (Innovation Hub) among all supply chain stakeholders to stimulate future innovative projects.
  • Developing regional guidelines for the adoption of sustainable agricultural best practices.
  • Designing two commercial demo farms (one located in Emilia and one in Romagna) for field testing and simulation of innovative strategies.
  • Studying the integration of blockchain technology to enhance traceability and transparency across the entire supply chain.

Project Activities

  • Supply Chain Analysis and Diagnostics: Identification of technical, managerial, and economic challenges in regional olive groves.
  • Demo Farm Design: Definition of two demonstration farm models (Emilia and Romagna) for field testing of sustainable techniques.
  • Best Practices Guidelines: Drafting application guidelines to promote low-environmental-impact agronomic practices.
  • Traceability and Blockchain: Feasibility study and modeling for the integration of blockchain technology along the olive oil supply chain.
  • Cooperation, Technology Transfer, and Dissemination: Creation of the Innovation Hub, organizing opportunities for exchange and discussion among businesses, technicians, and researchers to strengthen operators’ skills.

Expected Results

  • Strengthening technical and managerial knowledge among operators in the olive-growing sector.
  • Widespread and conscious adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and emerging technologies.
  • Establishment of a stable, integrated network connecting research, advisory services, and agricultural enterprises.
  • Driving the evolution of the sector toward a modern, traceable, and market-oriented olive supply chain.

CNR – IBE in the Project

The Institute for BioEconomy (IBE) of the CNR participates in the project as the scientific partner of the Operational Unit, contributing to methodological development, agronomic and environmental analysis, and the transfer of technical expertise to the olive sector.
