Identify, conserve and manage Mediterranean forest habitats

The main aim of LIFE GoProForMED is to enhance the conservation status of four target forest habitats within the Mediterranean Biogeographical Region.
This will be achieved through the application of close-to-nature management models in 4 representative countries in the Mediterranean area: Italy, Spain, France, and Greece. The project has selected four of the most representative and unique forest habitats of the Mediterranean biogeographic region: Quercus suber forests (9330), Quercus ilex and Quercus rotundifolia forests (9340), Castanea sativa woodlands (9260), and (sub)Mediterranean pine forests with endemic black pines (9530*). Specific actions will be implemented in the four selected habitats to improve their conservation status, or at least to prevent further deterioration.
These conservation practices will be experimental and demonstrative in nature, and will be disseminated through training activities, thereby creating a network of shared experiences among Natura 2000 managers and technical consultants.
O B J E C T I V E S
The specific objectives of the project are:
- To establish a transnational conservation strategy for the target habitats, also taking into account major risks related to forest fires;
- To define management and conservation models for the four target habitats and apply them on a broad scale, both in terms of area and distribution, including for demonstration purposes;
- To promote, among key forest management stakeholders, the sharing and adoption of management and conservation models for the target habitats, through training activities and management support tools.
The areas targeted by the pilot actions are:
- Italia: Goceano e Montes (Sardegna), Pratomagno e S. Antonio (Toscana).
- Francia: Massif du Luberon, Valensole, Préalpes de Grasse.
- Grecia: Volvis, Stena Rentinas Kai Evryteri.
- Spagna: Plans i Baridana, Foresta di Poblet, Muntanya de les Salines, Foresta di Paratge i Pla de Castell.
